If you want to make your mark in a competitive business, the first step is usually to obtain the professional qualifications preferred by the industry. In view of this, S C Learning Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Standard Chartered Bank (HK) Ltd, has set up a series of professional training programmes for the bank's internal staff as well as external candidates keen to get their careers off on the right track.
The comprehensive courses are built around a practical curriculum designed to be job-specific and closely related to everyday work situations. All main areas of consumer banking are covered in lectures, e-learning programmes, and workshops in personal and managerial effectiveness. Detailed modules are offered in risk management, financial sales and human resources, while soft skills such as negotiation, public speaking and media training are given equal attention.
Currently, around 75 percent of those attending the courses are Standard Chartered staff. Sheila Wong, general manager, NE Asia, S C Learning Limited says, "Our facilities and courses are of the highest standard and all our trainers are very experienced. The same resources are used for any external students. They may be in the field already or planning to join it."
The banking industry needs a steady supply of well-qualified staff at all levels. Ms Wong believes that meeting this need is the best way of staying ahead of the competition. As she explains, "By providing the appropriate training, we make sure that anyone who attends our courses is better qualified and more effective in the workplace. That is always our main objective."
She also emphasises that, even though there is no direct link to job promotions, internal Standard Chartered staff taking courses with S C Learning do have a definite advantage. And, though nothing can be guaranteed, external students who successfully complete relevant programmes usually have a better chance of landing a job with the bank.
