Department of Visual Studies
(Post Ref.: 19/17/CT)
The Department of Visual Studies (VS) offers a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree programme centred on three core subjects: Aesthetics, Art History, and Film Studies. Courses in these theoretical/historical areas are supplemented with studio courses, internships, service-learning opportunities and other co-curricular activities. We recruit about 30 new undergraduate majors and a small number of M.Phil. and Ph.D. students per academic year. Launched in 2006, the Artist-in-Residence Programme brings students into contact with a range of art and film practitioners with expertise in areas such as filmmaking, ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, and new media. The artist from Hong Kong or abroad is invited to conduct one 3-credit studio course for undergraduate students, provide consultation, give one public talk, and curate an exhibition together with students. During the residency period, the artist is expected to make use of the studio at the University as the primary site for artistic production. At the end of the semester, the artist normally mounts an exhibition of work or conducts a screening of film produced during residency. For more information about the Artist-in-Residence Programme of the VS Department, please visit https://www.ln.edu.hk/visual/.
Applicants should have a MFA degree or related qualifications and strong track records of creative practice, art projects and awards. They should also have a passion for nurturing students’ interest in visual and media arts. Lingnan University is fully committed to the pursuit of excellence in both teaching and research. Candidates who have some experience of teaching in higher education and can provide evidence of high-quality teaching are of particular interest. During the residency period, August to December 2019, the successful candidate will teach a studio course in his/her area of expertise, deliver a public talk, develop new project(s), and supervise students to produce works for inclusion in a group exhibition or a film screening.
The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund and incoming passage allowance for the eligible appointee. On-campus accommodation as well as a large, light multi-purpose studio suitable for ceramics, painting and other kinds of artistic production will be provided. The Leung Fong Oi Wan Art Gallery of Lingnan University, among other venues, is available to showcase completed works.
