Assistant Engineer - Hong Kong

This position performs a variety of engineering work in the initial planning and design phase of equipment, systems, or processes. Specifications are prepared, and necessary subcontracts and requisitions are defined. The incumbent has basic knowledge of concepts, principles, and theories in a subject area or discipline. He/she has a general understanding of the role of the team/ department and industry practice and standards.

Specifications are prepared, and necessary subcontracts and requisitions are defined. The incumbent has thorough knowledge of own subject area or discipline and basic knowledge of others. He/she understands the objectives of the area and related regulatory and/or industry requirements and practices.

Job Descriptions

To provide geotechnical support services to office, e.g. for geotechnical studies of slopes, retaining walls, foundations and civil engineering projects.

  • To support the geotechnical team in undertaking geotechnical calculations/designs/assessments for slopes, retaining walls, foundations etc.
  • To undertake supervision of ground investigations & geotechnical site works as required
  • To assist in the production of technical reports such as Basis of Design Reports, Stage 2 and 3 reports, EI reports etc.
  • To assist in the production of tender & contract documents and assist in preparing cost estimates and task orders etc.
  • To undertake supervision of construction works for Government or Private projects as needed.
  • The duties are mainly office based but with the need to visit sites in and around Hong Kong as and when needed. Longer term site based assignments may also be required.

The minimum qualifications for this position are:

Job Requirements

  • BSc in civil engineering or similar with significant geotechnical content
  • At least 2 years’ working experience in slope/retaining walls/EI project
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Understands the fundamentals of geotechnics and has good knowledge of HK geology and geotechnical practice
  • Ability to use geological/geotechnical/geospatial software such as DIPS, Slope/w, ArcGIS
  • Knowledge of aerial photograph interpretation and/or GIS would be an advantage
  • Graduate member of HKIE or similar professional body (HKIE Geotechnical Division preferred)
