Business Development Manager, Capital Markets

Business development
The business development team is responsible for helping partners to develop the Firm’s business, build its relationships with existing and potential clients and also manage the Firm’s market profile.

In broad terms, the business development team:
Operates as a trusted advisor to the fee earners
Supports the strategic development of practices, clients, sectors and regions
Drives the business planning process and ensures delivery against agreed plans
Manages the Firm’s key client relationship program
Helps manage the pitch process
Produces research on companies, industries and countries
Co-ordinates submissions to the main legal directories and advises practices on promoting their capabilities to these directories
Works with the fee earners to manage the production of bulletins and briefings from the conceptual stage through to distribution

The role
This position plays a key role in supporting the Capital Markets practice. Key elements of the role are:

Relationship building:
Develop strong relationships with the fee earners in the practice
Develop equally strong relationships across BD so that you can effectively connect your practice with the wider network

Strategy and planning:
Preparation of practice group business plans
Market segmentation and client targeting
Manage distinct additional firm-wide or practice projects as required, e.g. sector focus or client focus

Pitches, proposals and capability statements:
Project manage all aspects of responses, including presentations
Work with fee earners to develop strong key selling messages for pitches and submissions and to draft documents
Partner coaching
Conduct win/loss reviews
Opportunity spotting
Develop market knowledge, understanding and insights to identify potential business opportunities and expanding existing business, as well as raising the practice's profile via events, conferences and client seminars.
Identify and co-ordinate cross-selling opportunities with other practices, sectors and client teams

Client focus:
Conduct client feedback
Keep abreast of client issues to enable pro-active identification of business opportunities
Prepare innovative materials for clients
Project manage and active participation in client events
Develop the client focus skills of the associates

Profile:
Prepare advanced draft legal directories and award submissions for the practice with input from fee earners
Liaise with the PR /comms team on all media and PR opportunities for the practice

Infrastructure:
Ensure quality of base materials (capability statement, CVs, etc) in conjunction with fee earners and their assistants
Provide advice regarding choice of events, invitations and programmes
Ensure suggested BD activities reflect best return on investment for the practice

Qualifications

This is an ideal role for someone looking to step-up into a Manager role. Essential skills include:
Mandarin (written and spoken)
Practical, commercially minded and service driven with a "can do" attitude
Writing skills and attention to detail
Experience of working in a partnership, preferably law firm
Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise
Sensitivity to different business cultures
Strong influencing skills
Builds strong effective relationships with partners and BD colleagues across the Firm
Team player
Proficiency with systems, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, InterAction
