Chief Underwriting Officer (Hong Kong)

Backed by a strong and very visible management team, the Chief Underwriting Officer will be responsible for the underwriting success for all business sectors and lead the day to day operations of the underwriting function across the local enterprise.   • Define underwriting strategy and recommend business plans that will generate continued profitable growth in current and new markets
  • In conjunction with the COO, forecast quarterly underwriting results and set annual planning process
  • Analyse, evaluate and execute underwriting decisions in line with current Hong Kong guidelines and recommendations
  • Lead monthly process for year loss ratio / reserving
  • Own underwriting relationship with all carriers, including the setting of loss ratio targets and leading negotiation of renewals
  • Review and analyse new insurance applications to manage risk exposure with underwriting guidelines
  • Support the other teams in their negotiations with clients and brokers with a focus of building industry
  • Have a 'hands-on' attitude to manage, train and appraise junior staff to enhance the underwriting skills within the team;
  • Contribute to strategic planning and to overall management of the department
  • Establish appropriate internal underwriting procedures and criteria to control risk.
  • Support new product development and pricing
  • Oversee the development of the company's underwriting systems


  • Minimum of 15 years senior underwriting experience, within Asia with a strong knowledge of the Hong Kong Market. Candidates with knowledge of other international jurisdictions would be an added bonus.
  • Demonstrable operational skills and experience in an underwriting environment, including budgetary management, Financial management, Claims, resource allocation
  • Demonstrable track record of profitable business and generating business growth
  • Solid experience in writing and executing underwriting business plans
  • Career spanning experience developing and managing relationships with multiple insurance carriers
  • Experience with supervising and developing teams across multiple offices and team members with varying seniority.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, together with the ability to work well in either a small or large team environment
