Director, Employee Relations


Job Description:

Working in close partnership with the Regional Head of HR, and reporting to the Global Head of Employee Relations (ER), you will:

  • Be responsible for defining the employee relations strategy, and providing consultative recommendations, direction and support for the ER function in APAC.
  • Manage a team of ER professionals across the APAC region
  • Act as the single point of contact for global or regional projects/initiatives that have ER implications or notification/information sharing requirements, including, but not limited to M&A activity
  • Promote positive employee relations throughout the organization in APAC by ensuring the development and implementation of consistent and equitable processes, providing guidance on best practices and identifying solutions and ways to mitigate risk and maintain legal compliance.
  • Serve as the strategic partner aligned with global and local HR Business Partners to consult and execute on HR and business strategies and initiatives, including but not limited to, identifying trends and opportunities through data analysis and recommending proactive solutions
  • Partner with regional Employment Law and other Risk-management colleagues in support of a broader people risk management agenda.
  • Drive direct leadership and site engagement initiatives to ensure strong employee communication channels and engagement processes are in place regionally
  • Manage complex ER cases including disciplinary issues, grievances, performance management concerns, involuntary exits (including redundancies), sensitive and/or high risk leaves of absence, and other matters to successful resolution
  • Serve as an escalation point to the APAC ER and HRBP teams on complex issues and investigations
  • Review the impact of the ER function and develop recommendations to address site and organizational risks and opportunities, as well as training needs for managers and employees
  • Utilizes strong project management skills to ensure execution of key initiatives
  • Develop and deliver relevant training and education to improve leader effectiveness and build ER acumen
  • Own responsibility of the global case management tool in APAC and monitor relevant metrics captured by the tool to gather insights, determine trends and develop proactive strategies to remediate risk within the business
  • Interpret, communicate and maintain ER policies, processes and educational programs for APAC HR partners, employees and managers as appropriate
  • Interface with other Center of Excellence (COE) teams such as Talent Management, Total Rewards, Talent Acquisition and Analytics and Reporting, as appropriate
  • Design and own the delivery of training to managers, employees and HR professionals on APAC relevant ER topics and recent employment law updates


  • The successful candidate will possess a minimum of 10 years of Human Resources Generalist/Employee and Labor Relations or relevant experience
  • Excellent analytical skills with a strong knowledge of problems solving, root cause analysis and associated solution implementation - able to quickly analyze issues and data and determine the right solution
  • Strong team-oriented leadership skills - able to frame, confront and present issues to any audience and make tough decisions
  • Self-directed with strong initiative
  • Broad understanding of APAC employment and labor laws and policies, as well as other aspects of HR including talent management, talent acquisition, compensation and benefits
  • Strong business acumen including ability to understand complex business issues and strategies as well as drivers and needs
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in effectively influencing managers and business partners in the successful achievement of business and Human Resources initiatives. Good selling skills to market ideas and creatively drive consensus
  • Proven ability to build relationships and achieve results by leveraging the support of an extended HR team including Centers of Excellence and HR Business Partners to provide consistent, reliable, high quality support to the organization
  • Exceptional organization and project management expertise, as well process improvement and change management skills
  • Experience developing and delivering training and education to build leader effectiveness and ER acumen, as well as maintaining positive employee relations
  • Expertise working across the various HR disciplines including compensation, recruiting and talent management
  • Ability to work independently, juggle multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously, and capable of flexing solutions to changing demands
  • Strong facilitation, oral and written communication skills
  • Commitment to the highest standards of excellence and personal integrity
  • Experience in a large multi-national corporation helpful. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred. Advance degree a plus
  • Team management experience
  • Preferred experience within the Financial Services sector, including fund/asset management or investment banking.
  • Language skills a plus, including fluency in Mandarin, Cantonese and/or Japanese.
