Environmental Capability Building Chemical Specialist

OVERVIEW

Responsible for the supervision and implementation of Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) program and mill programs for various regions. Coordinates and administers the ZDHC program and Mill Sustainability Program for Tier 1 suppliers (garment vendors, garment facilities, laundries) and Tier 2 suppliers (fabric and yarn manufacturers). Organizes and implements the ZDHC program for select mills and vendors. Identifying, assessing and integrating green chemistry into supply chain and align with our goal of ZDHC. Drives program enhancements, as required. Establishes rapport with internal and external business partners, e.g. internal – Sustainable Innovation team who oversees ZDHC program, Global Sourcing teams and external – ZDHC group, vendors and mill suppliers, as well as various development and training service providers. Coordinates and administers the Environmental and Mill Engagement programs for select stand alone or vertical yarn or fabric vendors and mills, as well as manufacturing vendors and factories. Organizes and implements the Environmental and Mill Sustainability Program, through internal and external resources, for select garment vendors and mills. Drives program enhancements,
as required.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Implement various key focus area with int’l and ext’l business partners on:
oInput Management – ZDHC MRSL, Preferred Chemistry
  • Oversee chemical inventory data, and other relevant information from Suppliers, Chemical and Dyestuff suppliers
  • Oversee the building and maintenance of Chemical Inventory Library
  • Engage with chemical suppliers to drive research and development as well as production to hazardous chemicals
oProcess Management – ZDHC Chemical Management System (CMS) Manual, SAC Higg FEM 3.0 Section 7 “Chemicals Management"
oOutput Management – ZDHC Wastewater Guidelines; AFIRM RSL
  • Manage Water Quality Program with ZDHC Wastewater Guideline standard to denim laundries, and mill facilities
  • Oversee and facilitate suppliers’ wastewater and sludge test with third party laboratories and conduct desktop reviews
  • Develop environmental KPIs to keep track on improvements in Gap supply chain
  • Keep abreast on new laws and regulations, activities and initiatives in regards of ZDCH and communicate critical issues immediately to ECB Sr. Manager and int’l counterparts
  • Take the lead, identify training needs, develop training material, and deliver training for suppliers on chemical managements, wastewater treatment and other topics related to reducing environmental/chemical risk in global supply chain
  • Assist and support Mill Sustainability Program and environmental projects implementation plan for select stand alone and vertical yarn and fabric mills, or garment vendors.
  • Assess other Gap Inc. or Global Sustainability driven initiatives (such as CBD projects, Water Saving Program at mills, etc.) taking place within designated region or countries. Conduct appropriate outreach and collaboration with these other business partners to address potential conflict or interference with Mill Sustainability Program or Environmental Capability Building programs within designated region/countries. Highlight potential concerns to ECB Sr. Manager and seek support whenever needed.
 
1) Knowledge, skills & abilities:
  • Degree holder in chemical engineering
  • Extensive experience in handling apparel supply chain
  • Experience in Environmental Sustainability project as Zero Discharge/ RSL/ HIGG is a plus
  • Broad vision, self-motivated and able to communicate at all levels
  • Strong program management skills
  • High degree of work ethics and integrity
  • Possess strong leadership and influencing skills
  • Good at problem solving, strategic thinking and planning
  • Good command of written and spoken English, Mandarin and Cantonese
  • Good PC knowledge (MS Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint)
2) Minimum educational level:
  • University degree or equivalent work experience.
3) Minimum experience:
  • Min 3 years experience in chemical industry, compliance and sustainability
4) Physical Requirements:
  • Travel required
