Global Communications Manager, APAC

About The Job

Responsibilities

This individual will be critical to supporting American’s four long-term strategic objectives with internal and external stakeholders and in the region:
1) Make culture a competitive advantage
a. Working with our headquarters team in Fort Worth, Texas and international communications team in London to ensure APAC projects and activities align with larger corporate goals and initiatives.
b. Supporting team members by highlighting their great work to media and their 100,000 colleagues around the globe.
c. Identifying content for internal communications and assisting with the compilation of a bi-weekly team member newsletter. If compelling enough, highlighting those stories to media or other external audiences.
d. Representing the corporate communications division at leadership meetings and briefings, to flag potential issues and to strategize and offer guidance on any communications activities.
e. Making a positive impact on the larger team, by maintaining a positive, “can do" attitude and demonstrating a willingness to step in assist when needed.

2) Create world-class customer experience
a. Generating positive exposure for American’s world-class product and colleagues to audiences and media throughout APAC. This includes proactive media outreach, arranging tours, interviews and flights to highlight new products, routes and other amenities.
b. Localizing U.S. news and announcements for local audiences.
c. Collaborating closely with colleagues in Operations, Sales, Marketing, Government Affairs partner airlines and our headquarters team, among others, to produce results by thinking creatively and acting with professionalism and efficiency.
d. Knowing counterparts at headquarters to ensure leaders and team members in the region are always armed with the latest information, talking points and getting their questions answered for internal and external engagements.

3) Ensure long-term financial strength
a. Participating in crisis response preparation and media outreach. As the local subject matter expert for communications in APAC, this person will need to know the airports and teams working there inside and out and build relationships with colleagues, airport partners and stakeholders.
b. Effectively and judiciously manage the PR agencies we work with throughout the region.
c. Working accurately and efficiently to prioritize workload and acting with urgency and sound judgment for issues and challenges in APAC.

4) Think forward, lead forward.
a. Developing close relationships with media, influential bloggers and communications counterparts at our headquarters and partners in the region.
b. Being a trusted advisor to our sales, operations and other teams in the region.
c. Thinking creatively to promote American and our team in a very competitive aviation market in APAC.
d. Hosting various senior leaders to familiarize them with our APAC team and partners and advising them on team member engagement opportunities, potential issues and existing challenges in the region.
e. Assisting with the development of junior team members and knowing when to seek confirmation or direction from senior team members when making strategic decisions.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • A minimum of five years of communications experience, with experience working in aviation, the travel industry and/or with a U.S. or European-based company preferred.
  • Able to travel at least 25 percent of the month and work outside of normal office hours.
  • Excellent English written and oral communications skills, with a solid proficiency in the AP writing style.
  • Ability to speak, understand or translate any of the following languages is a bonus, but not required: Japanese, Korean, Cantonese or Mandarin.
  • Experienced user of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Publisher.
  • A keen sense of attention to details.
  • Ability to build relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Organizational and time management skills, project management experience.
