Investment Risk and Valuation Control Manager (Alternatives)

The role of the Investment Risk and Valuation Control Manager focuses on the assessment, control and governance of investment risks taken within illiquid alternative funds and separately managed accounts. The role focuses on market-, counterparty-, credit- and liquidity risk while also taken into account performance analytics. Also the role will incorporate independent oversight over valuations of underlying assets, participation in the valuation committees and ensuring appropriate governance of the valuation process. The candidate will be instrumental in advancing the risk management and valuation framework while supporting growth initiatives within a focus region for the firm .

develop a broad understanding of DWS’s strategies, their associated risks and mitigating controls

  • Conduct risk & valuation analysis on a range of underlying assets within a set of portfolios for varying mandates types with focus on illiquid alternative products,
  • Design and development of risk analysis for across the fiduciary platform and tailored analysis for individual business mandates,
  • Production and analysis of Risk Indicators for the alternative investments,
  • Periodic review and validation of models, policies and procedures used to for illiquid alternative assets,
  • Represent Investment Risk & Valuation Control in regional forums, in particular taking an active oversight role in Alternatives Valuation Committees and monitoring the process from the quality and governance perspective,
  • Contribute to special projects / task forces / working groups relating to the Risk & Valuation Framework or other identified risk issues,
  • Contribute to the continuous enhancement of risk and valuation control toolset and management reporting,

Keep abreast of changes in relevant local laws and regulations and understand their implica.

A suitable candidate should possesses the following core competencies :

  • Strong interpersonal skills; role requires constant interaction with individuals within the regional and global risk IRQM organization, across the business (portfolio managers, relationship managers, business management) and externally (e.g. regulators, service providers),
  • Ability to communicate issues to senior management proactively and effectively; ability to translate complex risk management concepts and analysis into succinct points driving action is essential,
  • Experience with and ability to learn core risk management concepts across a diverse set of instrument types, business mandates and risk disciplines (counterparty credit, market, liquidity),

Knowledge of Asset Management (and value chain) and various regulatory frameworks (e.g. AIFMD).

  • Experience in the financial industry (buy-side strongly preferred), with focus on market-, credit-, counterparty-, liquidity risk and valuation control functions,
  • Strong fundamental understanding of the asset management business with focus of illiquid alternative products,
  • Technical knowledge of financial markets, products and processes as well as related valuation and risk models (e.g. DCF, Multiple Approach, VaR , stress testing),
  • Subject matter expertise and understanding of key risk and valuation drivers for a variety of illiquid alternative assets (hedge funds / private equity investments - real estate, infrastructure, debts, derivative is a plus),
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access,

Minimum relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent; an advanced degree is a plus.
