Library Assistant

The job holder will provide administrative and logistical support to the teacher librarians to support the effective functioning of the ICS library collections and services.

Key Responsibilities:

1. User Assistance and Circulation

  • Answer library users’ enquiries while library is open, including the supervision of students using the library before and after school and during lunch-time.
  • Process check-ins and check-outs of books, periodicals, reference materials, audio-visual equipment and other library resources to staff and students before, during and after school.
  • Create accounts for staff and students and create and manage student library cards (ES).
  • Maintain proper and systematic circulation records and track overdue and lost books. 
  • Ensure that returned books are shelved on a regular basis, including the supervision of parent and student volunteers assisting with this task.
  • Provide general office duties including answering phones, typing, copying, filing, sorting materials and general correspondence.

2. Library Collection

  • Systematically categorize, organize and maintain library resources in line with the professional criteria and guidelines provided by teacher librarians.  Provide annual library resources stock taking, including the weeding out of old resources (under the direction of teacher librarians).  Ensure an accurate inventory of resources and compile statistics and general reports as required. 
  • Process resources for placement on shelf.

3. Reading Engagement

  • Promote and foster the enjoyment of reading for pleasure, contributing to the development of reading skills.
  • Provide support to teacher librarians and faculty in the promotion of reading, including activities such as Reading Olympics, Battle of the Books and author visits.
  • Ensure the collection and provide a wide range of quality reading material, catering for diverse needs and interests.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in any discipline from an accredited university.  Studies in Library Science or equivalent is strongly preferred. 
  • A teaching qualification and/or IT qualification would be beneficial.
  • Evidence of continued relevant Professional Development.
  • At least 2 years’ experience working in a school or office environment.
  • Previous experience in an international school and familiarity with North American curriculum is preferred.

  • Commitment to working with students with a genuine love.  Passionate in nurturing students with patient care, understanding and empathy. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build a trust relationship with teacher librarians, faculty, staff, students and parents. Have a positive and optimistic outlook and warm personality. Ability to manage confrontation and challenging behavior.  Able to stay calm in difficult situations.
  • Highly organized and able to manage time and assigned tasks well.
  • High level of personal accountability and is proactive in areas of responsibility.
  • Experience using Google Apps, Office 365, word-processing, spreadsheets, information database systems and the like.
  • Able to provide basic computer, AV equipment and hardware troubleshooting for students.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required (Cantonese and/or Mandarin is a plus).
