Job summary
HFW has been in Asia for over 30 years. During that time, we have grown to over 120 lawyers, including 35+ partners, across three offices (Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore).

It's an exciting time for our firm; we are building a strong and dedicated Business Development ("BD") and Marketing team in Asia. The role focuses on supporting HFW's Asia practice, i.e. primarily working with Hong Kong and offering some remote support to Shanghai. The post holder will also work closely with the wider Asia BD team on regional initiatives and the global team on firm-wide and team-related projects.

Attention to detail, strong English and Chinese language drafting skills and an interest in learning about HFW's business are critical. The successful candidate will be proactive in learning about the business and industries the firm serves, so as to better drive business and client development objectives. He or she will also have autonomy and influence on content creation in pitching and communications projects alike. Experience in a professional services firm is valuable, though not essential for a candidate with the right mix of skills and attitude.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing communications - Directory & award submissions

  • Directories – For all key legal directories (Chambers, Asian Legal Business, Legal 500) help coordinate submissions for Hong Kong and Shanghai, including:
    • Managing deadlines.
    • Collating data and creating draft submissions for partner review.
    • Capture matter highlights to be entered into the firm's credentials database.

Marketing communications - PR & brand


  • Work with senior team members to help deliver PR campaigns, media placements and HFW-branded content (bulletins, briefings, marketing materials, and website). Ensure content is distributed through the most effective social media channels.
  • Support the improved use of social media within HFW, as a minimum ensuring that publications, firm news and events are promoted through appropriate online channels, as directed.
  • Work with suppliers to create branded client gifts and merchandise.


  • Draft office updates (client wins, events, team news, etc) to be shared on the firm's intranet and internal communications.
  • Contribute to any regional and global marketing reports and management presentations.

Business development - Pitching

  • Work with team mates, lead partners and associates to draft, edit and proof written sections and creatively present responses to pitch invitations and capability statements, requests resulting from client meetings and other materials for new business opportunities. 
  • Support the pitch debrief process to help understand win/loss reasons.
  • Help track and report BD activity and pitch results.

Business development - Events & sponsorship

Ensure the successful delivery of all HFW events for the Hong Kong office, including

  • HFW-hosted events and external sponsorship – coordinate all events including seminars, roundtables, conferences and corporate entertainment.
  • External off-site (including overseas) client presentations and roadshows.
    • Each event will require varying degrees of support before (e.g. event brief, invitation, materials), during (e.g. set up and registration) and afterwards (debrief) depending on the size and complexity of each event. Liaising with the London marketing team, particularly events, design and database, and working with the Hong Kong secretaries as required.
  • Track ROI and advise on events best practice in order to ensure alignment with strategic objectives. 
  • Advise Shanghai colleagues on events best practice and remotely support with events held overseas.
  • Infrastructure - Systems & processes
  • Work with other members of the marketing team and office secretaries, ensure the delivery of best practice and up-to-date business development and marketing tools, infrastructure and processes, including:
    • Credentials database
    • Client database (InterAction) use
    • Marketing template and precedent/standard content
    • Other ad hoc task as may be required.
  • Training secretaries on BD processes and systems.

Key Skills & Experience Required

  • Degree-educated, ideally in a related discipline. In the absence of this, relevant experience in a professional services environment.
  • Ideally, a previous role in Marketing and/or Business Development in a law firm or other professional services environment. 
  • Time management: ability to work in a demanding, fact-paced environment, dealing with competing priorities and ensuring high-quality outcomes under pressure.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Professional demeanour.
  • Fluent spoken English and Cantonese or Mandarin, with excellent writing skills in both business English and Chinese. 
  • Ability to distil complex and lengthy wording or ideas into pithy, engaging prose.
  • Confidence to communicate with senior colleagues and act as an advisor, making suggestions for improvement, rather than just processing requests.
  • Both within the Asia and global team, we pride ourselves on being welcoming, inclusive and working together to achieve common goals. 
  • Enabling secretaries and junior colleagues to upskill by giving clear directions, delegating appropriate work and delivering training.
