Medical Underwriter for Health Insurance
Primary responsibility is to underwrite Health Insurance applications within the designated underwriting authority granted.
Ensure that underwriting decisions are processed within agreed time frames internally or as per specific SLA signed with partners.
Provide underwriting opinions and responses by telephone and email within agreed turnaround times and maintain quality of service at all times.
Work with management and Health Center of Competence to develop underwriting efficiencies and maintain a robust quality checking process for the department.
Attend company and departmental meetings on behalf of Health Underwriting function and work with Sales and Client relations to drive new business growth.
The ability to continually monitor and review processes and procedures, including systems processes, and recommend the necessary enhancements when required.
The ability to make sound underwriting decisions in line with the underwriting guidelines and make commercial decisions when necessary.
Refer complex medical cases to assigned authority and work with functional lead to implement new underwriting guidelines where applicable.
Provide support to the Claims and Legal departments on non-disclosure, anti-selection or potential fraudulent cases and offer retrospective underwriting decisions.
Liaise with other departments, Partner and Sales representatives on a regular basis and provide underwriting support to all parties.
Deal with escalated queries and complaints promptly and effectively, and ensure that the manager is kept updated at all times.
Develop portfolio review strategies across health products to ensure business sustainability
Take part in projects when required, review documentation were applicable, research information relating to your area and provide feedback.
Participate in steering and quality assurance activities of partner TPAs.
Participate in external industry underwriting association to contribute towards further development and to gather market/regulatory insights which may be helpful to fine tune internal practices.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in a Medical Underwriting role in Health Insurance. Additional general insurance experience preferred but not required
A high degree of technical knowledge covering all aspects of underwriting, including: medical underwriting, financial underwriting, occupational underwriting, avocational underwriting and residential underwriting.
Well-developed analytical skills and strong business acumen.
High level of negotiation skills.
High level of communication skills, both written and verbal.
Strong networking ability among peers both within the company and the industry as a whole.
High level of competence with regard to PC Software (MS Office etc.)
Good knowledge of regulatory environment with regard to GI & Health Insurance.
Ability to solve complex problems and develop solutions and communicate to the organization in an actionable manner
Ability to prioritize and to manage multiple projects with competing priorities
Collaborative, with flexibility to work with different teams in digital and across firm
Bachelor’s degree required
Working command of Cantonese and English
Completed Tertiary Education in any Discipline
