School Health Officer

The job holder will ensure the smooth operation of the Health Office in order to provide professional, immediate and appropriate medical support to the students and the school.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Medical Care

  • Provide initial, immediate and emergency care to students, faculty and staff who become ill or injured.  Prioritize and deal with them as appropriate, including carrying out appropriate first aid care and medically prescribed services.
  • Make arrangements to send home/contacting parents/hospitalization if necessary.
  • Oversee individual students’ restrictions and health challenges (e.g. asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, severe allergies, heart conditions, etc.).
  • Communicate with parents regarding medical issues relevant to their child.  Assist parents to access health and medical services when required.
  • Administer prescribed medications as per physician instruction.
  • Liaise with teachers and principals about the students’ developmental or medical issues that may require further medical investigation.
  • Advise and educate patients on follow-up care, general health matters, immunization, etc.
  • Provide support for sports events and in-school after school activities. 
  • Source and provide first aid kits for classrooms, camps, excursions, trips, etc.

2. Administration

  • Monitor compliance of school health program with local regulations and school policy.
  • Maintain the Health Office in good condition and well-resourced by ordering and maintaining adequate medical supplies and first aid stock and keeping the health office clean and sanitary.  Keep record of medical supplies expirations. 
  • Manage the safe storage and administration of prescribed medication.  Ensure medications is clearly labelled and in date.
  • Maintain confidentiality around student, faculty and staff and family’s health records.
  • Establish and update student health history and immunization records.
  • Acquire and maintain a database of practitioners/doctors/pharmacies in order to support families, especially those new to Hong Kong.
  • Complete and document Incident Report and relevant paperwork when required.
  • Maintain records of all injuries/sickness visits to the Health Office and report as appropriate.
  • Support the transition and assimilate of existing student health issues in collaboration with the administration.

3. Health Promotion

  • Research current practice in schools regarding health and safety and crisis management. 
  • Monitor the progress of a potential pandemic (e.g. Avian Flu, etc.) and report any major developments.
  • Give advice on health and hygiene management of school.
  • Promote and support healthy living and well-being with students, school, faculty and staff and parents.
  • Provide health education and anticipatory counselling.
  • Assist teachers to deliver health promotion topics (e.g. hand hygiene, puberty, diet, drug education, etc.) and teenage-specific medical issues.
  • Aware of child protection procedures and protocols and working within the school’s guideline.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Certificate, Diploma or Bachelor of Nursing.
  • Licensed or registered nurse in Hong Kong or appropriate other country.
  • Valid first aid certification.  Certified First Aid Trainer is highly preferred.
  • 5 years nursing and healthcare experience in a hospital, clinic or education environment.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience specializing in pediatrics and adolescent health.

Skill & Personality:

  • Able to independently perform routine medical procedures and first aid treatment.
  • Good understanding of government requirements on medical health and safety in school.
  • Commitment to working with students with a genuine love.  Passionate in nurturing students with patience care, understanding and empathy.  Have a positive and optimistic outlook and warm personality.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build a trust relationship with students and parents.
  • Ability to manage confrontation and challenging behavior.  Able to stay calm in difficult situations.
  • Ability to maintain the highly confidential nature of work.
