Senior Legal Counsel (APA Region)


In this position you will support strategic business development projects, corporate/M&A transactions and commercial contracting for the various Maersk brands in the Asia Pacific Region, with a focus on China. You will provide legal counselling to internal stakeholders, facilitate effective implementation of business decisions and protect the company's values and reputation. You will often be working as part of a project team of skilled and experienced professionals. The position is based at the Maersk Regional Office in Hong Kong and will require some traveling, in particular to mainland China.

Key responsibilities

  • Responsible for safeguarding Maersk’s values and "getting the best possible deal" within the project mandate from senior management.
  • Drive the legal workstreams externally and internally.
  • Identify and address legal issues/risk areas.
  • Steering the course of action that supports Maersk’s objectives
  • Working effectively with other departments and functions such as Corporate Development, Strategy & M&A, Finance, Tax, Compliance, etc.

We are looking for

  • University degree in law (preferably PRC/HK law or similar)
  • Fluent in both English and Mandarin (written and verbal)
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant legal experience in private practice at a reputable law firm and/or in a multinational company with activities in China
  • Solid transactional experience, working effectively within functional project teams; understanding of commercial playing field and different actors
  • Relevant experience in and knowledge of general corporate and commercial legal issues
  • Team player with ability to work independently
  • Able to stand firm, yet partnering with the business to find solutions to complex issues
  • Strong negotiation and people skills, business savvy
  • Commercial and high performing mindset, high level of integrity
  • Self-starter, hands-on, good communicator, empathy, personal tact
  • Willing to learn, travel at short notice, multi-cultural understanding
  • Well organised, punctual, and ability to influence
  • Flexible to adapt to changing priorities
  • Able to develop and manage relationships with law firms in a cost-efficient manner
  • Experience in shipping, transportation & logistics or infrastructure is an advantage
