Summary: The U.S. Mission in Hong Kong is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the two positions of Visa Clerk.
Duties: The incumbent serves under the direct supervision of the NIV Senior Visa Assistant and under the indirect supervision of the American Chief of the NIV Unit. The primary role of the incumbent is to screen incoming documentation and information from a variety of sources, flagging for officers any anomalies; to data-enter; track, organize, and file visa applications accordingly to a relatively complicated set of laws and procedures and within a specialized computer system; to prepare waiver request documentation; compile case information, including police and court documentation for officers; draft written security advisory opinion (SAO) clearance requests; and print visas while maintaining accountability and responsibility for controlled visa foils. The incumbent must be familiar with documentation issued by the Hong Kong, Macau, and Chinese Governments. As many interviews are conducted in Cantonese, the incumbent must frequently provide interpretation and translation for adjudicators. Procedures are generally standard and policies are clearly defined. The employee receives work assignments and tasks according to standard operating procedures and then performs tasks as part of an established process.
Qualifications and Evaluations
EDUCATION: Completion of two-year college or university studies is required.
EXPERIENCE: Two to three years of Administrative or government work, progressively responsible work experience involving the use of regulatory material and public contact is required.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: Must have good knowledge of socio-economic situation in Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China.
LANGUAGE: Level III (Good working knowledge) in English is required. Level III (Good working knowledge) in Cantonese or in one of the other Chinese dialects is required. (This will be tested.)
SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Exercise of good judgment and tact in dealing with the public, ability to work under continuous pressure, ability to draft correspondence in correct English and Chinese. Ability to apply good judgment in referring matters to higher levels of management, good interpersonal skills, familiarity with computer usage.
