Department of Sociology and Social Policy

The Department of Sociology and Social Policy ( combines teaching and research in sociology and social policy.  It contributes with the Department of Economics, Department of Applied Psychology and the Department of Political Science to the Social Sciences Programmes in the University.  Applicants are recommended to visit the departmental web site and programme web site ( for more information.


General Requirements

The applicants should have a PhD degree in Sociology, Social Policy, Public Policy or other related discipline with relevant teaching and research experience.  All applicants are required to provide information on their research and publication record as well as evidence of quality teaching.  Excellent communication and presentation skills in English are essential.  Administrative experience will be an advantage.  The appointees should be able to take up teaching duties for the Master of Social Sciences in Comparative Social Policy (International) (IMCSP) Programme and may be required to teach on other programmes.  The ability to teach “Social Policy in East Asia", “Governance, Management, and Delivery", “Sociological Research Methods" and/or “Social Change and East Asia" is mostly preferred; and ability to teach comparative historical analysis, quantitative and/or comparative analysis would be an advantage. The appointees are expected to have strong commitments to teaching excellence and service to the Department and the University community, and to engage actively in quality research and journal publications.



The conditions of appointment will be competitive.  Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee.  Experienced candidate may carry a functional title of Visiting Research Assistant Professor.  Appointments will be made as soon as possible for the academic year of 2018 – 2019.  The appointees will then be reappointed for the academic year of 2019 – 2020 on fixed-term contract of up to eleven months.  Any eventual further reappointments will be subject to performance, the availability of funding, and the University’s decision.
