2. Tailor your resume to the job specification

Tailoring your resume to each and every job specification is the most valuable thing you can do to improve your application success rate. Click here to see a tailored resume example

The first step is to define the job specification. You can do this in a number of ways:

  • Contact the HR department of the recruiting company; if they have an existing job description for the position, they may be willing to give you a copy. If you are working through a recruitment agency, ask your consultant for a detailed job specification.
  • Find someone who is doing a similar job in a similar company and ask them about the key attributes required to succeed in the job.
  • Define the job description from the job advert

You should then build your resume around your evidence that you fulfil the requirements of the job.
